Buccaneers Cruise to Cup win

Bournemouth made absolutely certain of a comfortable passage into the next round of the NDL Knockout cup by handling the difficult early conditions better than their Welsh rivals. It was full credit to both sides for deciding to try and tackle the greasy track that caused more than a few crashes and incidents. The track was such a key factor in the early heats that in heat 3 referee Phil Griffin showed unprecenented mercy when he called all four riders back when two riders went down virtually simultaneously on the south bend of the Wimborne Road track.
The Buccaneers provided the heat winners in eleven of the fifteen heats and built up a 15 point advantage to add to Sunday's lead of 28 points, within 4 heats.
Newport struggled in the early stages and suffered disqualifications to Lee Dicken in heat one and John Resch in heat 2 and then had Sam Hurst disqualified in the closing stages of a re-run heat three when he misjudged the final turn and inadvertently brought his partner Karl Mason down. Neither Hornet in heat 4 was able to finish the heat as the Buccaneers cruised to a 5-0 but there was temporary reprieve from the Buccaneers onslaught when Luke Priest, who endured a night of sheer frustration and misfortune, fell and was disqualified from heat 5. With Atkin never getting off the start line in heat 6 the visitor's misery continued although the impressive Shelby Rutherford was able to split the Buccaneers lively combination of Herne and Aldridge to mitigate the damage.
With another 4-2 advantage going Bournemouth's way in heat 7, Hurst splitting Newman and Hart, it was down to Rutherford again in heat 8 when he came in to replace Andrews who failed to meet the two minute time allowance. This time around he cleverly worked a way by Andrew Baseby to restrict the home side to another 4-2 and there really was no way back. Atkin as a tactical and Rutherford out again managed to give the Newport contingent something to cheer as they outpointed Bournemouth 3-5 in heat 9 and when Jay Herne ran too far into the dirt at the start of heat 10 his disqualification gave hope to the visitors that they could get something out of the re-run. Hurst fell though in that re-start and after the third attempt Mason held off a spirited effort from Aldridge to make it two heat advantages on the bounce for the visitors. Dicken followed up with a win in heat 11 but Newman, unbeaten at that stage, and Hart settled for the share of the points. That man Rutherford, being used on a tactical, won heat 12 with partner Hurst nestled in nicely for 1-8 heat score after Aaron Baseby's attempts to try and go round Rutherford for third place in the first attempt resulted in the Bournemouth reserve adding his name to the list of fallers and disqualified riders. Bournemouth fired in 5-1 advantages in heats 13 and 14 the latter coming when Mark Baseby celebrated his programmed rides with an unbeaten peformance on the night he became a fully fledged club asset, but he couldn't quite manage an outright maximum for he was eventually beaten by Dicken in heat 15. But nevertheless Baseby, the Rider of the Night, still battled well after a bad start and went round Hurst with cunning before setting about the chase on Dicken but he had effectively conceeded too much ground early on.
