Rye House Cobras v Bournemouth Buccaneers
The Bournemouth Buccaneers held on against a strong Rye House recovery to collect their first away league points of the season and maintain their 100% unbeaten start to the season. On an incident packed night, with fallers littering the scorecards the Buccaneers eventually ran-out winners by a slender two points, having held a massive 15 point lead at one stage. Jay Herne, who will drop down from his number one mantle following the breaking news that local boy Danny Warwick will be linking up with the Buccaneers, was in resplendent form, his heat 5 memorable win seeing him battle back from a one-time fourth to superbly pass Rob Smith certainly being his piece-de-resistance.
Herne, highly praised by a delighted Garry May, team manager, strung five straight wins together before being denied a maximum in the final heat of the night, but his precious second place in that one ensured the Buccaneers returned to Dorset with the lions share of the spoils.. Herne had solid support from former Rye House rider Andrew Aldridge whilst Aaron Baseby featured prominently in the early stages.
With the Cobras coming off the worse in the luck stakes during the opening exchange - having five fallers in the first 7 heats, Bournemouth built up a steady lead with a heat one 5-1 advantage through Herne and Aldridge then a 4-2 when Ben Morley was disqualified in the re-run of heat 2 after Jon Resch had infringed at the tapes. Aaron Baseby duly won the race, at the third time of asking ahead of Daniel Blake and with no one to bother Resch off his handicap the Buccaneers were able to build on their lead. After Jamie Courtney stemmed the tide for the Cobras in heat 3 Bournemouth registered another 5-1, 4-2 sequence their heat 4 advantage being somewhat fortuitous after long time leader Lee Strudwick fell in the latter stages.
Bournemouth didn't seem too perturbed when Halsey delivered a double-point win in heat 6 because Bovis was a faller and allowed Newman and Resch to minimise the damage. With a fine win from the battling Aldridge in heat 7 and another fall for Strudwick the Dorset side put double figures between the two sides again and increased that to 15 when Herne, as rider replacement, combined with Aaron Baseby at the expense of Bovis and Morley.
An 8-1 recovery for the Cobras, through Courtney's tactical ride and Rob Smith, made a big hole in Bournemouth's lead but the Buccaneers managed to retain their 8 point lead through sharing the next 4 consecutive heats. A 5-1 from Smith and Blake though in heat 14 took the match to a last heat decider but Herne did enough to split Halsey and Courtney for the 49-47 victory.
