Bournemouth Buccaneers v Scunthorpe Saints

A very tough refereing call in heat 14 cost the Buccaneers victory against the Saints in a meeting they led for the most part and never trailed. With Bournemouth holding a 5 point advantage with two heats to go they found their lead wiped out completely when referee Jim McGregor ruled that Mark Baseby's passing move on Adam Wrathall was unfair and had caused the Saint to fall. With Mark's brother Aaron another fall victim earlier in the heat the disqualification meant a nil point return for the Buccaneers who had quickly run up a 10 point lead over the first third of the meeting.
So the match went to a last heat decider, Bournemouth calling on their Double H-bomb force of Jay Herne and Jerran Hart a combination that had looked set to collect a 5-1 three heats earlier when they paired up for the first time in heat 12. But on that occasion it was a Herne fall that denied Bournemouth the heat advantage and in heat 15 it was a determined effort from Byron Bekker that salvaged a draw from the meeting.
Bekker claimed his fourth win of the night, one of which helped the Saints to a maximum 8-1, an individual tallly bettered only by the busy Hart who impressively won his first 5 rides of the match. Impressive because immediately prior to this National Development League match he had undergone a 5-ride stint FOR Scunthorpe in the Premier League!
Bournemouth gained 2 league points for this away draw but the general feeling in the camp was this was a victory that they had seen stolen from within their grasps.
