Weymouth Wildcats v Bournemouth Buccaneers (KO Cup)
Bournemouth Castle Cover Buccaneer lost their unbeaten tag as they were crushed by Dorset rivals Weymouth Wildcats at the Wessex Stadium Raceway on Friday night. The 56-40 win for the Wildcats now leaves the Buccaneers facing a tough task if they are to proceed further in the Knockout Cup competition when the two sides meet for the second leg on July 2nd at Wimborne Road. The large crowd, heavily boosted by visiting Bournemouth fans endured a delay of an hour to the scheduled start time, due to the absence of an ambulance that was reported to have been held up in traffic but once the all-clear was given to commence proceedings the Wildcats tore into the Buccaneers with vigour. The first 6 heats all finished in 5-1 scorelines, five in favour of the Wildcats and one - through Jay Herne and Mark Baseby - to the Buccaneers. It was a disastrous start for former Weymouth rider Kyle Newman in heat 4 when he narrowly missed the two-minute time allowance and started from a 15 metre handicap but through a piece of over-riding he took a specatacular pit-bend tumble causing a re-run without him and Bournemouth swiftly changing the reserves over with Aaron Baseby swapping with Jon Resch. Newman was on the deck again in heat 6, eventually finishing the meeting with just 2 points. Fellow ex-Weymouth rider Jay Herne fared considerably better dropping his only point to Lee Smart in heat 10 and including a double point tactical heat 7 win in his tally of 17. There was an excellent ride from Andrew Aldridge also as a tactical, in heat 11 stubbornly beating 'Buzz' Burrows to keep the Buccaneers fighting whilst Mark Baseby, still carrying a knee injury, just refused to give in and fought tigerishly throughout the meeting. But the Wildcats were by far the better side on the night with solid contributions from one to seven Weymouth 56 L.Smart 2',2',3,2',1'=10+4 M.Wright 3,3,3,0=9 T.Webster 1,2',2',2=7+2 J..Cockle F,3,3,1=7 M.Burrows 2',2,2,3,2=11+1 T.Day 2',0,1',3=6+2 J.White-Williams 3,3,F,0=6 Bournemouth 40 D.Warwick 0,F,0,F=0 A.Aldridge 1,1,2,6^,0=10 J.Herne 3,6^,2,3,3=17 M.Baseby 2',1,1',2=6+2 K.Newman Fx~,F,1,1=2 A.Baseby 1,1,1',1,0=4+1 J.Resch 0,1,0=1 Referee Mr Ronnie Allan Gates 1+3 1+3 ~ 15m hcap due to 2 minute penalty 1.
