BUCCS BACK TO WINNING WAYS
Bournemouth Castle Cover Buccaneers put last Friday's first leg cup defeat at the hands of Weymouth behind them to out-point a battling Isle of Wight side in the National league Development League and move into second place.
Still unbeaten in the league the Buccaneers always maintained the upper hand in this keenly contested encounter to run out winners by 51-41 that despite losing the services of Mark Baseby as early as heat 3 when the youngster aggravated the knee injury he has been carrying. Already wearing a knee brace Baseby appeared to lock up around the pit turn as he tried to catch the Johnson pairing (Brendan and Chris) whilst Jay Herne was clear in front - a position he enjoyed in all 5 of his outings.
Herne (pictured receiving his Rider of the Night award from Clive and Chrissie Drake), who 24 hours had ridden the track for the Poole Pirates looked in fine fettle as he sped to a perfect maximum and with Andrew Aldridge starting lively - narrowly missing out on a second win when pipped on the line in a photo-finish by Nick Simmons - the Buccaneers had plenty of scoring power. Kyle Newman was again in good form for the Buccaneers but he blew his engine in his final outing (heat 13) but had been great value as he had battled hard and deserved all 7 of his points.
With Mark Baseby ruled out so early the Buccaneers depended heavily on his brother Aaron as the 'senior' reserve and there was no disappointment there as Aaron mustered paid 15 from a full quota of 7 rides. Much rested on Aaron's shoulders as the Buccaneers were already short of the services of high-flying Jerran Hart and hard Jon Resch deputising for him. Resch had two falls on the night but finished with a paid second place in heat 14 when the luckless Ricki Mullins failed to finish for the fourth time in 5 outings.
For the Islanders Nick Simmons and Tom Brown were reliable scorers whilst Brendan Johnson also clocked a race win - the only 3 visitors to do so.
