The swashbuckling Bournemouth Buccaneers squashed the dreams of the Weymouth Wildcats overcoming a first leg deficit of 16 points to march into the semi-final stage of the competition. It was a well-orchestrated victory for the Buccaneers who had Danny Warwick back to his best producing his best performance of the season and the home side more than adequately covered for their injured Mark Baseby as they progressively clawed back the deficit to level the tie after just 9 heats when Jay Herne and Kyle Newman combined for the Buccaneers fifth heat advantage on the night holding off Mark 'Buzz' Burrows. It had been something of a fruitless night for Burrows who suffered two costly retirements from his first two outings as the Buccaneers benefited from the slices of the good fortune cake more than their Dorset counterparts did, who lost the services of Terry Day with an elbow injury as early as heat 2.
Bournemouth moved ahead for the first time in the whole tie through Warwick's third straight win of the night and a battling third place for Andrew Aldridge, the Kiwi just missing out on grabbing second from Weymouth's star performer Matt Wright. A controversial disqualification for Lee Smart, when on a double point haul in heat 11 as he rode across Jerran Hart's line round the pit turn virtually sealed the Wildcats' fate and Smart wasn't to be seen again after this incident deciding to withdraw from the meeting 'at his own request'.
Bournemouth's victory was somewhat tainted for Jay Herne as his engine blew to pieces at the tapes in heat 12 but when out two heats later he produced a spectacular final lap to deny James Cockle a race win. Bournemouth 62(102)
